The rise of the chief Client Officer

For many organisations across financial services, fintech and professional services, the answer is no longer as straightforward as it should be. Years of growth through acquisition, product expansion and increasingly complex operating models have created organisations that look integrated from the outside, but can feel fragmented from the client’s perspective.

A client may see one firm. Internally, they may be navigating multiple business units, relationship teams, delivery functions and support channels — each with its own priorities, processes and measures of success.

That disconnect is prompting a fundamental question for leadership teams: should accountability for the client sit at the very top of the organisation?

The emergence of the Chief Client Officer points to a broader shift in thinking. Rather than treating the client relationship as the responsibility of individual sales or service teams, firms are beginning to view it as an enterprise-wide strategic priority — one that connects growth, experience, delivery and long-term client value.

The role is still taking shape, and its mandate differs from organisation to organisation. But the direction of travel is clear: the client is moving from the edges of the operating model towards the centre of the executive agenda..
