Winning under pressure: leadership lessons from Matthew Syed

11 Jun 2025

At a recent event co-hosted by Google Cloud and Leathwaite, performance expert and author Matthew Syed joined our partner Chris Smith to explore the essential qualities that define outstanding leadership in times of uncertainty and change. With Matthew Syed Consulting as a valued partner for the evening, the conversation delved deep into what it really takes to lead through pressure and unlock high performance.

Matthew’s message was both inspiring and practical. He urged leaders to embrace a dual mindset: to remain humble and curious enough to seek out new perspectives, while also showing the conviction needed to act decisively when it matters most. This combination is vital in today’s world, where complexity is the norm and challenges evolve faster than ever.

One of the key themes of the evening was the power of cognitive diversity. Matthew shared that the best ideas and breakthroughs often come from those who see things differently, and that leaders must create environments where it’s safe for people to challenge ideas and bring fresh thinking to the table. Psychological safety was highlighted as an essential ingredient in this process – not just to foster kindness, but to ensure honest, constructive debate that refines thinking and drives better decisions.

Matthew also drew on insights from his work with top athletes and teams, as well as his experience helping organizations navigate cultural transformation. He reminded us that while talent and expertise are essential, what truly sets high-performing teams apart is the willingness to learn from setbacks, adapt to changing circumstances, and continuously improve.

In the context of private equity, digital transformation, and shifting expectations for leadership, these lessons couldn’t be more relevant. As Matthew noted, it’s no longer enough to protect performance; the real winners are those who learn, evolve, and find opportunity in the face of disruption.

At Leathwaite, these insights go to the heart of how we help our clients: by building leadership teams that don’t just weather the storm but thrive in it. We’re grateful to Matthew Syed, Chris Smith, Corie Hawkins and everyone who joined us for such an energizing and thought-provoking evening.
