Key Themes

For most global banking groups and large multinational corporations, external hiring has stagnated as senior legal appointments have been promoted from within. This is due to a continuing focus on utilising and developing internal talent, as well as mounting cost pressures. However, within those sectors that are in growth mode, such as fintech, hedge funds, cards and payments, there has been a good number of General Counsel / Chief Legal Officer appointments. In many cases, firms in these sectors are upgrading their senior legal talent to both match the expansion of the wider business as well as ensure there is proper infrastructure in place regionally to meet regulatory requirements. This has led to a current trend of investing in key leadership hires over and above growing existing talent.

In recent months, Leathwaite has had several inquiries from General Counsel wanting to gain an understanding of the current compensation structures of their peers and what impact COVID-19 is expected to have. Leathwaite has created and sent a survey to over 1000 senior legal professionals globally and will shortly be sharing the results of this survey.

In the UK, Leathwaite will be sending a broader survey to General Counsel later this year to ascertain how the pandemic has affected the senior legal community as well as focusing on pre-existing key topics such as the use of external legal support, the growth of legal functions and the increasing reliance on technology and automation. We will be distributing the results of this survey in a whitepaper in early 2021.
