  • Ongoing changes at Deutsche Bank include:
    • Russell Green has joined Deutsche Bank as CTO for the GTO Corporate Technology function. He joins from RBC where he was Head of Architecture for Operations, Risk and Finance.
    • Markus Glover joins to be Head of Digital Technology from UBS where he was Head of Client Facing IT (Neo).
    • Vikram Dewan has resigned from UBS where he was Head of Group Operations IT Delivery, joining Deutsche Bank.
    • Pascal Boillat, Head of Operations and Technology at Fannie Mae has been announced as the new GTB Head of Operations and Technology reporting directly into Kim Hammonds.
    • Mark Russell joins having previously run Group Internal Audit at UBS.
  • The consolidation of Dana Deasy’s leadership at JPMorgan Chase continues, with new appointments being announced:
    • Mark Ashton-Rigby stepping up to be CIO for CIB.
    • Simon Cooper being announced as the firm’s Chief Architect.
    • James Young is driving the digital agenda through a central function. This is a key focus area for growth and the business is building a dedicated digital centre in Hudson Yards, New York.
    • Rich Crossley has joined – and relocated to Hong Kong – as APAC CIO. He was formerly Global Head of Equities Technology at Citi.
  • Continued change following UBS’ technology restructure has led to movement in the senior leadership team. Today there are fewer than 10 MDs in Capital Markets Technology, down from 30+ MDs two years ago.
    • George Vega joined as Head of IB IT Delivery from Fannie Mae, replacing Phil White who retired.
    • Richard Doyle replaces Vikram Dewan who resigned to join Deutsche Bank.
    • Marc Baumslag has joined Bank of America to be Global Head of Strategy and Architecture, and Head of Quartz, from UBS where he was Global Head of Risk and Finance IT.
  • Other banking moves:
    • Julien Pequegnot has joined Bank of America from Nomura, where he was Global Head of Credit and Research IT.
    • Kritika Shekar has left Barclays to join HSBC as Global COO for Application Development Management.
    • Peter Richards has retired from Bank of America where he was Global Head of Networks.
    • Kevin Ma has left Morgan Stanley, where he was running Front Office Technology, to join HSBC as an MD for Business Development for the Greater China region.
    • Justin Moffitt has been announced as the new Global CIO for Macquarie Bank, leaving Barclays.
    • Kevin Rhein, the Global Head of Technology and Operations at Wells Fargo, is retiring. A successor is to be announced, but the bank may also move to a LOB-aligned structure, thus negating the need for a direct replacement.
    • Michael Krupsdahl joined Saxo Bank as Head of IT Infrastructure from State Street.


  • Antoine Shagoury has been appointed Global CIO at State Street, leaving the London Stock Exchange where he was previously Group CIO and COO; as Chris Peretta is promoted to Global Head of Enterprise Data and Technology.
  • Simon Lumsdon has been hired as Head of Technology for Hermes Investment Management, previously he was Head of Technology for BlueBay Asset Management.
  • Maria Azua leaves Barclays to join Fidelity as Head of IT Operations.
  • Ed Tolson joined Citadel as Head of Order and Execution Management IT.
  • David Kelly has been appointed COO at Pine River Capital.
  • Jeff Hurley has joined Two Harbor Investments (Pine River Capital spin-off) as CTO from Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.
  • Alfred Spector joined Two Sigma Investments as CTO, from Google.

Market Utilities

  • Chris Corrado joined the London Stock Exchange from MSCI, relocating to London.
  • Mark Jamison has left BBVA in Madrid where he was Head of Customer Solutions to join Visa in San Francisco as Head of New Product R&D.
  • John Finch joins Thomson Reuters as Chief Technology Officer for the Financial and Risk business. Rob Elsey has been appointed CIO.
  • Chris Swan has joined CSC as CTO for Global Infrastructure Services, working for Steve Hilton, from ADIA.
  • Curtis Brown has been appointed CTO & Chief Content Officer at Dun & Bradstreet. Previously he was the organisation’s CIO. He is now responsible for production and delivery of all analytics, data, products, services and technology globally.


  • Marta Zarraga has joined Aviva as the CTO, from Vodafone.
  • David Nichols has been appointed UK GI Operating Chief at Zurich.
  • Richard Kirby has taken on a new role as Health & Benefits COO at Aon.
  • Darren Coomer joined Co-operative Insurance as CIO.
  • Jacob Abboud has joined Allianz as CIO for Insurance.
  • Phil Jones has joined Prudential as UK Change Director, he was previously the CIO at Lloyds Insurance.
  • Lyn Grobler joins Hyperion as CIO from BP where she was Corporate CIO.
  • Ron Guerrier has been named as Farmers’ Insurance new CIO. He replaces Shohreh Abedi who has left the organisation.
  • David Jack joins AJ Gallagher as a CIO on its technology board, reporting to CEO Grahame Chilton. He was previously the CIO at Hyperion.


  • Vipul Nagrath has moved from Bloomberg where he was CIO, to ADP.
  • Kevin O’Connor has been announced as Group CIO for William Hill. He joins from Standard and Poor’s, but previously worked for Paddy Power.
  • Alastair Brown joins Lombard Risk Management as CEO. He was formerly the International CIO at RBS.
  • Scott Baldry joined Mercuria as CTO, from Credit Suisse where he was the Chief Architect.
  • Renee Wynn has been appointed as CIO at NASA, replacing the retiring Larry Sweet. She previously worked for the Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Richard Brown, formerly Executive Architect, Banking and Financial Markets at IBM, has joined R3 CEV, the financial services Blockchain consortium, as CTO.
  • James Carlyle, PCB Chief Engineer from Barclays has also joined R3 CEV, as Chief Engineer.

CISO and IT Risk

  • Gary Owen became CISO of Time Warner. He most recently led Promontory’s cyber practice and was formerly with Goldman Sachs.
  • Jim Alkove has joined Nest – a technology firm best known for its automated thermostat product, owned by Google – to be the Head of Security. He was previously the Chief Security Officer for the Operating Systems Group at Microsoft.
  • Al Tarasiuk became Group CISO of Deutsche Bank amongst a reshuffle in their security team, replacing Rolf Riemenschnitter. Al joined last year from Homeland Security.
  • John Holland joined PNC as the Chief Technology Risk Officer. He was  formerly CISO at Credit Suisse.


  • There have been a number of changes in Deutsche Bank’s operations team: 
    • Mark Matthews the former Global Head of Equities Operations is now Head of Markets Operations. He will continue to be based in New York.
    • Kathy Wallis has moved internally into the client on-boarding and KYC function. She will report to Mark Price who is leading the function.
  • Other market moves include:
    • Peter Akwaboah has joined Morgan Stanley as COO for Operations. He was previously with RBS in Singapore as the APAC COO.
    • Denise Wyllie who was a Partner in operations with Goldman Sachs in London has relocated to Hong Kong with the firm. 
    • Lisa Donnelly, at Goldman Sachs, has moved to London as European Head of Operations.
    • Luis Pelegio has moved internally with Goldman Sachs in India to be Global Head of Asset and Wealth Management Operations based in New York.
    • Gloria Lio, who was previously US Head of Securities Operations has left Goldman Sachs to join BNY Mellon.
    • Kieran Hanrahan continues as Global Head of Fixed Income Operations at JPMorgan and has gained additional responsibility for European branches and LATAM.
    • Marc Bulstrode has joined Co-Funds as Operations Director. He was formerly Head of Change & Business Management at Fidelity Investments.
    • James Alexander has joined Barclays Wealth as Head of Operations. He was previously at Coutts.
    • Jeff Williams has been appointed COO for Apple, reporting to the CEO Tim Cook.
    • Jonathan Neale has been announced as COO of McLaren Technology Group.
    • Darren Ellis has joined Zeus Capital as COO. He was previously with Canaccord Genuity in Europe.
    • Filip Coen has joined Specialist technology start-up fund Force Over Mass Capital as COO. He joins from JPMorgan.
    • Mark Milliner has been appointed COO IAG with Andy Cornish acting COO until Mark Milliner starts his new role.


  • Regulation continues to drive significant demand for transformation professionals in the interim marketplace. Areas of specific focus are MiFID II, structural reform and Senior Managers Regime. Firms are concentrating on hiring interim programme directors to deliver key streams.
  • COO functions within the front office are hiring interim management to scale up, in an effort to bolster their strength amidst focus on cost reduction programmes.
  • There has been a marked increase in demand for senior interim technical talent for proof of concept projects. There has been a spotlight on this in compliance and financial crime technology for some time, however this is shifting towards distributed ledgers. The application of proprietary “Blockchain” technology within the payments, confirmations and settlements spaces has led to the drive to hire engineers from innovation labs on an interim basis.
