Introduction

  • The legal market is busier than it has been in recent years. There have been changes at the top in several banks that have opened up opportunities in a function that has seen a lack of movement since the financial crisis. Alongside this, large banking groups have been diversifying their revenue which has meant General Counsel positions have opened up in businesses such as private wealth and asset management. Contentious regulatory issues remain a focus for the banks and some firms have appointed a Global Head of Investigations who is a peer of the Global Head of Litigation. At a regional level, the lead individual generally remains double hatted with coverage in both investigations and litigation.

 Key Moves

  • Michael Shaw stepped down as Deputy Group General Counsel for Barclays, a role he has held for the past six years.
  • Simon Croxford transitioned in August from the role of General Counsel for Barclays Investment Bank and Head of Non-Core Legal to the role of Corporate General Counsel.
  • Mark Shelton has joined Barclays Investment Bank as General Counsel and Regional General Counsel for the Americas. Mark joined from US firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher where he was a member of the Investigations and Crisis Management, Securities Enforcement, Securities Litigation and White Collar Defence practice.
  • Erica Handling has joined BlackRock as General Counsel covering EMEA. She was previously General Counsel covering EMEA for Barclays Investment Bank.
  • Judith Shepard stepped down as Global General Counsel of Corporate and Investment Banking for Barclays.
  • Paul McDade has joined Deutsche Bank as UK Head of Legal for Asset and Wealth Management. He joined from JPMorgan Chase where he held the role of General Counsel Private Bank International EMEA and Asia.
  • Simon Dodds and Christof von Dryander have transitioned to the roles of Co General Counsel for Deutsche Bank, after Dick Walker stepped down as General Counsel. Both Simon and Christof previously held the roles of Deputy General Counsel for the bank.
  • Gary Lynch the Global General Counsel at Bank of America Merrill Lynch has been appointed Vice Chairman of the Bank. He is now responsible for Research and Legal and Compliance.
  • Elaine Williams, former HSBC Deputy Company Secretary, has joined British Land as its first General Counsel. Williams will join British Land as GC and Company Secretary in November.
  • Timothy Harris, former US General Counsel at Life Insurance giant Prudential Financial, has been promoted to the global top job following the retirement of General Counsel Susan Blount.

  • Malcolm Wood left as Standard Life’s General Counsel in October last year to join Lloyds Banking Group.
  • Wilson Thorburn has joined Lloyds Bank. The former JPMorgan Europe, Middle East and Africa litigation head and ex-Ashurst Partner is the new acting head of litigation.  Thorburn originally took the role on an interim basis and the hire sees Thorburn step into the role vacated by Philippa Simmons who has not yet resurfaced in another position.
  • Anne Clarke has joined Insurance provider TAL in a newly created role as Chief General Counsel, which will be effective as of the end of September 2015. Clarke will be joining from AMP. Prior to this role she was Executive Counsel in-practice with Herbert Smith Freehills.
