Key Moves

Financial Services

  • Paul Donofrio has been appointed by Bank of America as Group CFO, succeeding Bruce Thompson who has left the bank. Donofrio has previously served as Global Co-Head of Corporate and Investment Banking. 
  • Michael Chae, in keeping with this, has been appointed by Blackstone as its new CFO. Michael was previously head of the private equity business. Chae replaces Laurence Tosi who has left to be the CFO for Airbnb.
  • John Triolo has joined Morgan Stanley as US Head of Tax Reporting. Triolo joins from PWC where he was a partner in the banking and capital markets practice, and will report directly to Ethan Schiffman, who was appointed Global Head of Tax earlier in 2015.
  • Matthew Kennett has joined Standard Chartered as Group Programme Director for business efficiency. Kennet joins from Credit Suisse, where he led group finance controls and reporting, and previously managed global expense and efficiency management.
  • Steffen Parratt was appointed CFO at KCG Holdings earlier this year. Parratt succeeds Steve Bisgay who went on to join Cantor Fitzgerald as CFO.
  • Gavin Matisonn joins Union Swiss as Operations Director in South Africa, leaving his role as the UK Controller at Credit Suisse.
  • Alan Quaintance has been hired by Standard Chartered as the new Group Head of Accounting Policy as the bank continues to build out its talent across global finance.
  • Marc Arnold is leaving RBS and is replaced in his role as CFO for Corporate and Institutional Banking,  by Richard Place, ex Asia CFO.
  • Peter Albero, the former Head of SEC Reporting at Morgan Stanley has joined PWC in its financial services advisory function. Albero’s appointment reflects a concerted effort by public accounting firms to bolster their capability with industry professionals.  
  • Kim Lazaroo has joined Morgan Stanley in Europe as the EMEA Corporate Controller. Lazaroo joins her ex colleague, Chris Castello, who moved to Morgan Stanley as the EMEA CFO from Goldman Sachs last year.


  • Charlie Rozes has moved to JLT, the global insurance brokerage, to be the new Group Finance Director. Prior to this move Rozes was running investor relations for Barclays Group.
  • Scott Egan has been appointed by RSA Insurance Group Plc as its new CFO. Egan was previously the interim CEO of insurance broker Towergate.

Solvency II

  • Richard Priestley, ex-Director of Finance Operations at Prudential Plc, joins Aviva as the Deputy CFO, UK & Ireland Life. Richard brings a wealth of solvency II experience with him and is an example of tier one insurers bolstering their regulatory expertise prior to January 2016.


  • Improving diversity in executive positions continues to be a top priority for financial services firms including insurance, with a range of programmes widely used including returnships and flexible working. The success of these is slowly being realised as more senior women rise within finance:
    • Lara Sojka, Director of Accounting Operations at Liberty Mutual, promoted to Controller for its international business.
    • Kathryn Winup, former finance transformation lead at Aviva, promoted to CFO Digital. As the digital agenda becomes more prominent, insurers have looked to provide specific digital infrastructure support.
    • Clare Binmore joins Aviva as the Director of Global Finance and Chief Planning & Performance Officer, reporting to the Group CFO, Tom Stoddard. Clare was previously the Head of Finance at Friends Life and joined as part of the acquisition by Aviva.
    • Amber Wilkinson joins insurance broker Bluefin as the CFO. Amber was previously the Head of Finance & Risk Director for AXA PPP Healthcare’s private medical offering.


  • Stuart Wooldridge joins KPMG as an Internal Audit Partner in the Insurance & Investment Management practice at KPMG. Stuart previously led the group head office audit function at Prudential Plc.
  • Ralph Daals was promoted to Group Chief Auditor at RSA. He was previously the Chief Auditor for UK & Western Europe and replaces Caroline Ramsay who retired earlier in the year to pursue non-executive opportunities.
  • Stephen Pang, formerHeadof Internal Audit at AJ Gallagher International, joins Amlin as the Head of Internal Audit.
  • David Butler joins AJ Gallagher International as the Head of Internal Audit. David was previously the Head of Internal Audit at UNUM.
  • James Turner, Group Head of Internal Audit at Prudential Plc, promoted to Head of Group Finance.
  • Judi Gonsalves, Global Controller for Liberty Mutual’s Personal Insurance business, promoted to Group Corporate Auditor.
  • Chester Yue returns to the US with MetLife as Audit Director for finance, procurement and corporate systems. In his previous role he led technology and operations audit across Asia, ex-Japan, based in Hong Kong.

  • Tim Larkin, Controller at QBE Americas left to return to consulting with technology specialist Synergy iXs
  • Saul Shame joins QBE as the Corporate Controller for the North America business. He previously led global FP&A at AIG.
  • AlokRoongta, CFO for AXA’s Indian business, promoted to Financial Controller, APAC. Alok relocated to Hong Kong to fulfil the role.  

Cross Industry Moves

  • Ben Chrnelich has joined IPC Systems, the trading communications technology firm, as CFO. Chrnelich joined from MSCI, and was previously CFO for NYSE Technologies and CAO for equities at Lehman Brothers. This is an example of the increasing levels of movement between industries as non-bank financial institutions, financial technology firms and large corporates seek to draw on financial services professionals to lead and develop their CFO functions.
  • Heather Dixon joined PepsiCo as the Assistant Controller, leaving her job as Head of Accounting Policy and Advisory at American Express.
  • Kimberly Scardino joins Walgreens Boots Alliance as Global Controller and CAO from American Express.
  • Lee Rochford, Virgin Money’s CFO, has left the firm. A replacement is yet to be announced.
  • Oliver Corbett joins Hyperion as the Group CFO. He joins from his interim role at Towergate. Corbett brings a wealth of experience from his previous CFO and M&A roles throughout his varied career.

Internal Moves

  • Dave Watts has moved internally at HSBC to become the CFO, Global Commercial Banking.
  • Jeremy Radley, also an internal candidate, replaces Coates and is now the Global Asset Management CFO.
  • Mark Boyle is the new the EMEA Chief Accountant at HSBC. He was previously Asia Head of Financial Reporting for the firm.
  • Bryan Pascoe has become the new Group Treasurer at HSBC.  Pascoe was previously Global Head of Debt Capital Markets (DCM), a position he had held since December 2010.
  • Thierry Roland, whom Pascoe replaced,is now the new CEO, Global Banking and Markets, Americas, based in New York, taking over from Patrick Nolan, who is returning to London as Vice Chairman for banking.
  • John Tierney returns to Europe from Hong Kong to be the EMEA CFO at Nomura, based in London.


  • IFRS 9 is receiving focus and additional interim resource. The implementation of IFRS 9 is expected to be complex, even more so for those institutions with international operations, as there remains a divergence with the US rules.
  • Implementing capital related regulation remains a major challenge for all banks, seeing high demand for subject matter experts in CCAR, Basel III, FRTB and BCBS 239.
