Finance & CFO

Key Themes

We have recently released the results of our annual CFO survey, which highlighted key themes on finance leader’s agendas:

  • Process & Technology Change: Pre Covid-19, polled CFO’s said the single item they were spending the most time on was process and technology change above time with their internal clients, managing teams, dealing with regulators or any specific technical item. While in a pre-coronavirus world many CFOs may have bemoaned systems changes taking them away from their day job, many will now be grateful as they navigate closing the books with a fully remote team.
  • Analytics Focus: Analytics has overtaken data as the primary focus area for hiring, suggesting legacy investments in cleansing data were successful enough to enable functions to take the next step. 60% of respondents were using at least an intermediate level of analytics in their FP&A functions and over 65% were either using or planning some sort of AI or machine learning within the function in the next couple of years.
  • Cost Management: Pre-coronavirus, CFOs had already identified that cost management was the biggest factor to impact their functions in 2020. Nearly 45% expected budgets to be cut and c.50% of respondents were predicting headcount reductions in their finance functions in 2020.
  • Remote Working: Perhaps the biggest challenge facing finance leaders is the new work environment, with only 7% of respondents telling us there were interested in flexible working for the year ahead.

In Q2 2020 we have found that Treasury functions are in the spotlight with many businesses needing to upskill given the crisis and impact on managing liquidity and capital.

There has also been significant movement within the group corporate control functions among global banking groups in the last six months as organizations look to upgrade and develop successors in what is a narrow market. Given the breadth of the Group CFO role (and the added pressure due to Covid-19), CFOs are more stretched than ever and need a strong Corporate Controller to delegate to.
