Key themes and trends:

  • The transaction banking market remains in a state of constant transformation. New entrants are threatening the biggest transaction banks even after organisational restructuring to meet increasing demands from corporates
  • Technology savvy non-banks are increasingly challenging the privileged access and relationships traditional transaction banks currently enjoy with their institutional clients
  • With new systems constantly emerging to reduce costs or enhance functionality, there is no hint of a slow down on the technology investment side. This will undoubtedly multiply as global trade and commerce becomes ever-more digitised
  • Transaction banks should aim to establish themselves as early adopters of digital platforms, given corporates’ demand for digital functionality and cost-efficiency moving forward
  • Banks that fail to seize the opportunity will fall victim to emerging non-bank players who are transforming financial services by creating disruption practices which enable clients to do more with less in the new digital landscape
