Leathwaite has been a long-standing supporter of the annual charity golf day that is held each year at Dale Hill Golf Club in East Sussex.

Peter Byford, who has been instrumental in organising the events each year, provided us with the following personal article to explain his motivations for why he created the event:

Back in the early 1990’s, I would regularly return home from work to find that my wife had been out running a coffee morning to raise funds for the Macmillan Cancer Support (MCS) charity, but it always seemed to me that the time invested by these wonderful ladies was out of all proportion to the money raised. So one day I got together with my wife and the chair of the local MCS committee and suggested that maybe it was time to do something that would raise serious money for the charity.

“How about running a golf day where players compete for the MCS golf trophy” I said. At that time, I was a member of the East Sussex National Golf Club. I was sure that we would find lots of golfers who would be interested by the joint attraction of golf at a course, which had recently hosted the prestigious European Open golf tournament, whilst simultaneously raising funds for such a worthy charity, which sadly all too many of us will need to turn to during our lifetimes.

Simple maths told me that with teams of four starting on each hole, we would need to find 72 golfers (18 holes x 4 golfers) to make the day viable.

The simple outline was born. All we had to do now was find the golfers, arrange to take over the golf course for the day, find auction prizes for the evening, and decide what to charge.

We were staggered by the response! We did not find 72 golfers… we found 100+!

The only way to describe that first event was “spectacular”. At the end of the day, we totted up the books, and were delighted to arrive at a figure of approximately £10,000 that we were able to pass on to MCS!

With our first event complete, the next discussion was whether we should repeat the event?

Suffice to say that 20 years later we have just held our 13th golf day, and have raised a staggering £140,000.

The event was held many times at East Sussex National, but has now found a permanent home at Dale Hill Golf Club in Ticehurst, East Sussex.

I am delighted to say that one of our regular supporters has been Leathwaite, who play and contribute to the cause year after year.

I had no idea that 20 years on from my initial idea for a golf day we would still be generating significant sums for my favourite charity.

To anybody thinking of ways to help their favourite charity raise funds, try it. The personal joy that you will get out of it is so special, I can promise you.
