On September 18th 2019 Leathwaite hosted its second annual ‘Career Beyond Rugby Workshop’ in partnership with The Hong Kong Rugby Union.

As in 2018, the intention was to provide current players from both the Hong Kong Men’s and Women’s 7s and 15s rugby teams with a much stronger foundation in which to prepare for their transition to a ‘second career’ beyond rugby.

We were thrilled to have built on the success of last year’s event and this year welcomed over twenty players to a series of workshops covering topics from preparing for interviews, creating a transition strategy and psychometric assessment tools.

We were also pleased to welcome Callum MacRobert from Black Isle Global to host a session concentrating on communicating with clarity.

At the end of the day, we included a networking event which gave players an opportunity to engage with executives from a number of different industries and to practice some of the techniques discussed during the day.

Alistair Bone from Leathwaite’s London office, himself a former professional rugby player who played for Premiership club Wasps, opened the event and attendees have since commented on how powerful it was to hear from his real life experience with one commenting that “I didn’t realise the transferable skills we as players have until he really anchored it his talk” – skills from communication, accountability and dealing with pressure to name a few.

“I didn't realise the transferable skills we as players have until Alistair Bone really anchored it his talk.”

We look forward to continuing to develop this program with the Union – we are pleased that this year we have since been able to facilitate informal intern and mentor programs for a small number of players and we plan to work on developing a more formal mentoring program moving forward.
